Pro Tools is the industry standard, and serves as the high powered legacy option for those in the market. In contrast, Logic Pro X is an Apple-native DAW that is not usable by Windows-based computers. Price is obviously going to be a factor in your decision. Logic Pro is the cheaper option and can be downloaded from the Apple Store. Pro Tools is the more expensive option and you can buy lots of extra plugins so the sky's the limit! Here's a little tip for you: download a free basic version of Pro Tools First. It comes with 16 audio. Sending Audio from Pro Tools to Logic X. Create a send on the Pro Tools audio track and assign the output to the first Soundflower Aggregate Devices' output (in the example above ‘SF 3-4'). Set the sends' fader up to unity (0.0). Play Pro Tools, you should now see the audio flowing from the send in pro Tools into the Logic X.
Here's a question we come across a lot – which Digital Audio Workstation (D.A.W.) is the best one to invest in? It's kinda like asking who'd win in a fight; Batman or Superman? And we all know the answer to that one right…anyway.
Whether you're a seasoned pro, a student taking an avid pro tools course or maybe you're a newbie just starting out and looking to cut your teeth with the best technology, there's some subtle differences between the two leading D.A.W.'s that are useful to be aware of and might help you decide which to invest in.
What's What
When you take one of our audio courses you'll have the chance to get stuck into the various bits of kit out there. And we don't want to get too technical in this short article but here's some of the things you might come across when comparing DAWs. At first glance they can look very similar and in reality, they do a lot of the same things but each has specific advantages and often they tend to get used by different types of people because of their unique capabilities.
- Apple Logic Pro is typically used by musicians, guitarists, singer songwriters as the package is very user friendly. It comes with nice drum loops and effects and is easily installed on a laptop so you can set up a little home studio or record on the move.
- Avid Pro Tools has of course held the top spot as the industry standard for a long time (almost since the beginning of digital recording!). So when you walk into nearly any top studio in the world, you're going to find a copy of Pro Tools and people who know how to harness its power!
Flexibility and Compatibility
Ok so there's two things we want to discuss here. First of all, Apple Logic Pro will only work on a Mac so if you've already got a Windows setup you're going to need to invest in some Apple gear. Avid Pro Tools can be installed on either Apple or Windows so it gives you a bit more flexibility.
The second thing worth noting is compatibility and this is an issue we discuss a lot at with our sound engineering students. We mentioned that Pro Tools is the industry standard in audio software and if you do decide to go with Logic Pro or another package like Cubase, then you'll want to go to a studio for mixing or to add some overdubs. But will the studios software be compatible with what you are using – it's important to check that out in advance or time and work can be wasted; and most budding artists don't have money to waste!
Interface and Layout
Apple Logic Pro has a very easy to use interface and comes with lots of plugins and instruments installed. You can jump right in and start adding drum loops, strings, brass to track, record some vocals with maybe a guitar and a bass and really get it sounding good quickly. Add in a MIDI controller and easily record piano or create your own drum loops.
Avid Pro Tools is really the king when it comes to recording live music because it can capture such great detail. The software allows you to dig in deep to the tracks and move things around without any hassle – in fact it's even easier to do a lot of things in Pro Tools than in Logic Pro.

It can be very difficult to understand how to chop and move your sound clips, but once you get it down, it is rather simple and user-friendly. Pro Tools also has a grid that allows you to work and edit in detail in samples, beats/bars, and minute/second time. It is known for being great for singer-songwriter and acoustic music, probably because of how simple it allows the workflow to be. However, the customer service is known for being a bit difficult and usually only allows you to talk to a message bot.
Cost: Subscription $30/month – Unlike the other DAWs, Pro Tools offers only a monthly subscription service of $30 a month. This is great if you want to test out the software or do not want to spend a lot of money to start using it right away. However, if you plan on using this software for the long run, $30 a month truly does add up and ends up being much more expensive than the other DAWs.

Logic
Although Pro Tools is the most commonly used DAW in the industry, these next two DAWs are becoming serious competitors (and are even better in some ways). If you are transitioning from GarageBand on a mac, Logic will be a great fit for you, as its layout and workflow are extremely similar to it. Like GarageBand, it is easy to navigate, but has many more features that will allow you to take your music production to the next level. Another fun feature in Logic is their virtual drummer. If you want to create a beat that sounds like you recorded an actual drummer, Logic's virtual drummer has a very natural sound. After you to give it the vibe, tempo, and overall style that you want, there you go, you have yourself a drummer! Logic is amazing at creating the perfect sounds for electronic music, and its software instruments that are already in the system are very high quality.
Cost: $199
This is a set price for existing and new customers. It is less expensive than a few of the options for Ableton and the cumulative monthly payments for Pro Tools. However, the drawback is that it doesn't give you multiple options to choose from, like Ableton does.
Ableton
Ableton is known as being a wonderful software for playing live music, especially EDM. However, that is not all it is great for. Ableton is also very effective in any type of sound design, composition work, and creating sounds that are a bit more unique or 'out of the box.' It truly has a lot of versatile opportunities. Ableton also has incredible plug-in tools that can easily be found and used within the DAW. These plug-ins all sound extremely realistic, high-quality, and are simple to manipulate how you want them to be. Ableton can be a bit intimidating and difficult to understand at first, but with a little practice, it actually makes a lot of sense and is very efficient to use.
Cost: Ableton Live 10 ($99), Live Standard ($499), and Live Suite ($799)
The price goes up based on the more features that are added. This is a great deal, because it allows you to pay for what you think is worth it. Personally, I use the Ableton Live 10 and I feel that it has nearly all the features I would like. The ones it doesn't have can be easily downloaded as plug-ins and placed into Ableton Live. Either way, I think Ableton's prices are the best option for what you get, especially because it allows you to choose what you want.
As you have read, all three DAWs have pros and cons to them. It really depends on what layout and features you're looking for when it comes to making your music. Once you decide what that is, you can find the right software for you.
