This has dramatically changed in GarageBand X. Although it still has access to the Logic Plugins, you can't load them individually. You only can load Patches and the Smart Controls Window provides a few controls that lets you alter the Plugins (Instrumnets or Effects). You only can load AU Plugins onto a Track, either the built-in Apple PLugins (not the same as Logic Plugins!) or from thrid-party AU Plugins.

So the advantage of getting Logic is that you are not restricted, however, it comes with a steeper leraning curve.
